As a consumer, you are legally obligated to return used batteries.

Batteries containing harmful substances are marked with a symbol consisting of a crossed-out trash can and the chemical symbol (Cd, Hg, or Pb) of the heavy metal that is relevant for the classification as harmful:

“Cd” stands for cadmium.
“Hg” stands for mercury.
“Pb” stands for lead.
